Application & Aid

The Office of Off-Campus Study and the Office of Financial Aid provide you with support as you plan your study abroad experience.

Application process

  1. Once you have selected your program or your program has been approved (if it is not on the Preferred Program List), complete and submit the application as soon as possible. You do not need to wait for your leave of absence to be approved to start applying. Many programs have rolling admissions, so apply in advance of the deadlines. Often programs fill before the published deadlines.
  2. Request any needed transcripts from the Registrar’s Office.
  3. Seek faculty recommendations and provide them the information needed to complete those recommendations. Note: Not all programs require a letter of recommendation. Some may require more than one letter.
  4. Submit your program’s home institution approval form to the assistant director of off-campus study to complete and return to the program.  Online approvals should also be directed to the assistant director.
  5. Make sure that your passport is valid 6 months past the date of your study abroad program. If it is set to expire or you do not have a passport, start applying for a passport right away.
  6. Submit your Hamilton Leave of Absence by the appropriate semester deadline.
  7. Read the guidelines and steps for choosing courses and transferring credits in the Courses Abroad page and the Transferring Credits page. Before leaving campus, submit the Petition for Transferred Credit form by the appropriate semester deadline.

See frequently asked questions about the application process.

Hamilton study Abroad fee

Hamilton’s study abroad fee is $1500 per semester program. A student participating in a single, full-year program will be charged $2000 for the academic year, divided equally each semester. This fee does not apply to Hamilton programs.

Hamilton provides support before, during, and after a student’s experience abroad. This support includes maintaining an off-campus study resource center, advising at all stages of the study abroad experience, processing applications and leave of absence declarations, transferring financial aid, transferring credit, travel health services, and support for course registration and housing arrangements for the semester the student returns. Students also maintain access to library resources, academic advisor and departmental resources, and technology resources such as their Hamilton email account.

Many Hamilton students who study abroad receive financial aid, and Hamilton College will work with students receiving aid to try to make their study abroad goal achievable.

  1. Read Studying Off Campus on the Financial Aid site for a complete explanation.
  2. See Cost & Aid for more information about financing and scholarships.
  3. Make an appointment with Diane Barrett (dbarrett@www.bwenquan.com) in the Financial Aid Office to talk specifically about your financial aid situation.
